Esta madrugada, hora peninsular, fuentes oficiales de Estados Unidos anunciaban el asesinato de Ayman al Zawahiri , líder de Al Qaeda desde que Osama Bin Laden fuera ejecutado en 2011. El terrorista, según fuentes estadounidenses, se encontraba en Kabul y durante la operación «no ha habido víctimas civiles». El ataque de EE.UU. fue con un misil aire-tierra Hellfire lanzado desde un dron, o avión no tripulado, y que explotó a las 06:16 de la mañana del 31 de julio en Kabul. Según un alto funcionario norteamericano, en el ataque solo murió Al Zawahiri, aunque estaba en una vivienda con su familia, mujer e hijos, que salieron ilesos. La familia vivió en Pakistán hasta que se mudó a Kabul este año , aprovechando el regreso de los talibanes al poder con el repliegue norteamericano. Todo el ataque se hizo de forma remota, según esa fuente oficial estadounidense, sin un solo soldado de EE.UU. en el terreno, a diferencia de la muerte de Bin Laden en 2011. A Zwahiri se le mató lanzando el misil por un balcón . El edificio no sufrió daños. Biden fue advertido antes del ataque y se le informó después. Desde mayo hubo reuniones en la Casa Blanca, en las que el presidente fue implicado, para planificar esta operación.
